The polymerization-assisted assembly is thus realized. The presented crack-free PCs are almost free of cracks in large areas as demonstrated by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The good monodispersity of the colloidal spheres and the special core-shell structure are beneficial for the colloidal assembly into well-ordered periodic structures. Meanwhile, the hydrophilic PAA shell and the hydrophobic PS core can provide a good wetting environment for infiltration of the monomer, such as NIPAm and acrylamide, and thus induce the uniform infiltration. The high infiltration rate contributes to the formation of crack-free PCs.
