Major courses in Physical, Life, and Laboratory Science (B1-3) are designed to develop fundamental quantitative and qualitative skills in students so that they are able to develop skills for using the language of science, understand the processes and phenomena of the natural world, and apply the concepts of science to problems of everyday life. Students must learn to think scientifically by doing, using and teaching science. In Physical, Life, and Laboratory Science courses (B1-3), students learn to apply and evaluate scientific data to solve problems. Students learn to construct scientific knowledge by making observations and collecting data. Students learn to draw conclusions from these data by analyzing and interpreting the results of experiments, simulations, and mathematical and statistical models. They use their understanding of the natural world and its processes to communicate and use data to solve problems. Students learn to apply the scientific methods in Physical, Life, and Laboratory Science courses (B1-3) to the creative and humanistic arts. In Arts and Humanities courses, students develop their understanding of the historical and cultural contexts in which works of art and humanistic inquiry are created and interpreted. In the Life Sciences courses (B4), students investigate the mechanisms underlying the biological, physiological, and pathological processes occurring within humans. They study the structure and function of living organisms from cells and tissues to whole organisms and their environments. In this course, students study the anatomy and physiology of the human body including the nervous, circulatory, endocrine, immune, and skeletal systems. Students also learn about diseases and medical practices including diagnosis and treatment. They study the nature and function of living organisms including cells, tissues and organs, and the ways in which humans use and adapt these organisms to their own needs. In this course, they learn to apply their knowledge of the structure and function of living organisms to their everyday lives, their work, and their families.
In Science courses, students learn to use scientific methods and approaches to solve problems and develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their world.
