When Emperor He Xiaozong crowned Yang Yanzhao as general in AD 1032, the Yang and Song warlord armies clashed with the main rival to the Song, the Jin dynasty. General Yang Yansi died in the battle. A legend arose that Yang Yansi's spirit appeared in a dream to the Song emperor, warning him against attacking Jin. When the Song emperor ignored the dream, Yang Yansi reappeared in the sky with his followers and burned down the top of the palace, killing the emperor in the process. The Song court could not afford to offend a figure as powerful as Yang Yansi. The Song court therefore withdrew its army and implemented a truce with Jin.

The Yang clan, previously known as the Northern Han clan, used military might and martial arts to make its name in the Han Chinese-ruled Song dynasty. After the Northern Han disintegrated in the late Tang dynasty, the Yang clan was the biggest among the remaining clans, often in conflict with the Song regime. Yang's son Yan Yansi was renowned for his expertise in medicine and martial arts. His seventh son Yang Yanzhao, who excelled in martial arts, won a match with Pan Bao's son Pan Zhao and gained the admiration of the emperor. When a young girl Chai Meirong's (who is Yang Yanzhao's childhood sweetheart) hand in marriage was up for grabs, Yang Yansi escorted her to the Song court to discuss the proposal with the emperor, and they were married with the emperor's blessing. The following day Yang and Pan meet with the emperor. The emperor wanted Yang Yansi to be the head of his new military academy, but he ruled against it as Yang's son was only 26, while the head of the academy was usually in his late 30s. The Yang clan was therefore forced to retreat to their former territories, but Yang Yansi established his own military academy. Yang Yansi was killed by Chai's father, the Song general Pan Zhao, who was aiming to force her hand in marriage to her cousin Prince Erzhu. The emperor pardoned Yang Yansi's son Yang Yanzhao, who avenged his father's death and killed Pan Zhao in battle. The emperor granted Yang Yanzhao's request to become the head of the military academy.
