With the objective of organising and bigger cooperation between all branches of the library, a Library Board under a chairman was set up in 1948. It is located in M.G.R Nagar, Mylapore, Chennai. The library has won several awards and accolades, such as the National Book Trust Award for its contribution as a community college and a resource centre for the city's children, the V. Y. Raghunath Dharmakumara Foundation Award for Outstanding Public Library of the Year for 2015, the Tamil Nadu Public Service Award for Outstanding Service to the Community in 2017, and the Indian Institute of Prachin Nath Award for History and Culture by the Irrigation Department of Tamil Nadu. The library has maintained a tradition of providing books to children with financial assistance. It had an annual budget of approximately Rs. 88 lakh in the year 2017–18.
The library building is said to have been designed by Mr. Hart Cherian. The historian's sudden death in 1953 led to the loss of the plans. The library building was completed under the supervision of Mr. K. Ganesan. The building is a two-story structure. The front level, known as the ground floor, houses the general-library section, the children's library, the study room, the reader's room, the archives, the reading room and the book circulation section. The library is known to have the largest collection of Tamil books in the world. The second floor, known as the gallery, houses the special collections, the owner's library, the video display section, the electronic library, conference rooms, seminar rooms, the internet centre, the reading room, the book-press section, a bank of computers and the south Indian painting gallery.
The library's research library has over 16,000 books on Tamil, neighbouring languages and different regional literatures. It also houses over 10 lakh manuscripts, journals, periodicals and other documents.
