No concerns were raised with the fabricator's decision to continue making Tu-144D airframes with the same cracked wing panel,[35][52] which had been used on two of the three Tu-144 crashes.[53] The cracks continued to progress, and in mid-1983 the plating layer within the turbine disc was seen to be thinning[54] and peeling.
The cracks appeared to be growing at rates in excess of 100 metres per day. By mid-1984 the disc had thinned to the point that it required replacement,[47] which caused a further change in strategy: VVS was instructed to hold off on sending the Tu-144s to the factory for repairs until after the summer. Some airframes were repaired immediately, after they were parked out of the weather; all were fully repaired by the end of 1984.
On 9 December 1985, a Tu-144 made a ground landing accident in Baden-Württemberg (Germany) after an engine fire.[56] The aircraft broke into three large pieces, approximately one tenth of the original length of the airframe, after crash landing and catching fire. The plane was dislodged from its rails and caused serious damage to the surrounding area.[57] According to several sources, the aircraft was still on the ground and only three crew members were on board when it finally exploded.[58][59][60][61] Although the engine fire was extinguished and the fire trucks arrived, the left wing of the piloted aircraft stalled, the pilot could not roll the aircraft, and started a full-speed roll, which ended up with a crash into a building.[56]
Prior to the flight of Tu-144D, all its components were tested at TsAGI, but because of cracks that could be found in the airframes of the first four aircraft it flew, two involved at least 10 m (32 ft) length cracks. When the aircraft was immersed in pressurized water for personnel familiarization in 1977, the base of the tail wheel disc cracked, and the rudder control cables failed.
