The simple version of BitTorrent protocol is to save the data on the peer that is downloading. This peer tries to connect to some tracker, gets meta information about the content that it is downloading and saves this meta information to itself. When the data is saved this peer becomes a seeder. The tracker calculates the amount of data which is being downloaded by all of the seeders and and informs all of the seeders about this amount. The seeders receive this information and know they are downloading some data. Leechers can connect to the seeders and get some data (as a download function) and then become seeders themselves. Usually network bottlenecks can cause leechers to refuse to connect to seeders; so this results in many seeders being wasted. If data in peer can not be saved at some time, the peer becomes a leech. It is not required to by any rules that all the peers become leeches to be able to download the data from seeders. Such behavior is not so common.

The different protocols in the BitTorrent family have different amount of functionality. The simple protocol is not able to control the data being downloaded, the counterparts are able to control the data being downloaded and some may share files removing the need for trackers.

Clion is mainly able to control the data being downloaded. It can divide the peers to two classes (those who can provide data and those who can not). It can also divide the peers to three classes. The ones who can provide data can act like seeders. They are not able to download the data by themselves. They are able to control their download speed and the number of bytes they are ready to share. They are also able to tell the other peers which data to grab. The peers who are not able to provide data are called so called leeches (as they grab nothing, just grab?). They can control the amount of data they are going to grab.
