Nevus pruriticus (NP) is a chronic epidermal inflammatory-like disease that is characterized by pruritic papular eruptions. The eruptions predominantly affect the skin of the head, neck and upper extremities. Three cases are presented from a prospective case series of patients with persistent pruritus. Each patient presented with a history of pruritic papules and plaques that were refractory to topical antibiotics and steroids, and in two cases pruritus had also begun beneath the lesions. The common features in all three cases were pruritic papular eruptions on the head and neck, most of which had no associated chronic symptoms or signs.
Cutaneous cysts can be classified as epidermal or dermal. The former is characterized by a cystic structure in the epidermis that does not extend into the dermis. The latter is defined by a cyst of which the base extends into the dermis. These two categories can be further subdivided into epidermal or dermal cysts [11]. Epidermal cysts are mostly congenital or acquired as a result of trauma. They most commonly form in the scalp, face, tongue, ears, and nails [12]. While dermal (epidermal) cysts are more common in adults, they can occur in children [13]. Dermal cysts most often resolve spontaneously without medical or surgical treatment [14]. However, surgical intervention is usually required, especially if there is a bothersome cosmetic, functional, or pruritic presentation. In this article we describe our experience with surgical management of epidermal and dermal cysts. A retrospective review of the available medical records of patients who underwent excision of dermal cystic lesions at a single tertiary care centre between 2001 and 2016 was conducted. A review of the literature of dermal cystic lesions and methods of their surgical management is also provided.
Dermatologic surgery is an exciting and evolving field of medicine, which requires knowledgeable surgical and nonsurgical practitioners, and textbooks to be prepared for education, practice and research. A stepwise conceptualization of the knowledge, anatomical understanding and understanding of the operative skills required in order to progress is essential. d2c66b5586
